Finding a VPS

It's easy find a vps. You can google for linux vps or windows vps.

First you will see the ads from the various companies offering a VPS.

What's surprising is the variation in price of a VPS. Some cost at least as much as or more than a dedicated server. Some cost truly a fraction of a dedicated server.

One place i've found that has good offers is webhostingtalk

This thread is just for those companies and individuals that offer a VPS at what are very competative pricing. They clearly compete with each other and people can give direct feedback on the product. It feels a little like the ebay rankings, but the conversation is more direct and others can get involved.

Fully Managed VPS

Some companies offer their servers as fully managed.

The definition of fully managed varies of course.

In general though I think it means that the vps company does general maintenance of the vps server that you might not have the time or expertise to administer.

Of course it's important to know just exactly what is meant by fully managed.

Expect to pay more for fully managed. The premium can be worth it if you need the extra help and expertise.

OpenVZ and Xen

The most common type of Virtual Private Server (VPS) runs on a technology called OpenVZ.

This type of VPS is allocated on a physical server and the resources are shared. The OpenVZ and HyperVM allow the administrator to allocate resources to each VPS.

Because the resources are shared it's easy for the administrator or seller to oversell or overbook the resources. In general that's ok because not everyone uses all the resources at the same time. The risk is that the server becomes overbooked to the extent that customers take a performance hit or there is no longer any bursting resources available.

One solution to this problem for both the seller and the buyer is to rent a Xen VPS. Xen technology means that the user has dedicated resources and no bursting. They also have control of the linux kernel in a way you don't get with OpenVZ.

Reviews of a VPS

The idea of the blogg is really to review VPSs. Or at least review features and developments in the vps industry.

Getting and running a vps is both cheaper and easier these days.

You don't need to know much if any unix and there are even windows VPS offers out there now.

What i'd like to look at are the main features of a vps and what you should look for when renting one.

1. availability
2. Bandwidth
3. Memory
4. cpu
5. etc.

Got a new VPS with CentOS and Hostinabox

I like to run a server. I don't always have so much running on there, but I do like to get it running and see what I can get to work.

It's a bit of a linux fetish, but some of you might understand.

For about $6 you can get a VPS and run what you want.

You can run your own server, sell space, sell space to others who sell space. The possibilities are unlimited.

For the cost of a lunch you can have the server running all the time and providing content to the world.

The special thing about a VPS is the it is virtual and you could argue environmentally friendly. You have the control over the server and can do what you want.

Now they have become very automated and the interfaces are very friendly. If you don't want to you never have to touch the command line interface. You can use a very friendly web interface for nearly everything.
